But due to the ever changing needs and requirements, often the users have to take the decision of migrating the DBX files of Outlook Express into NSF files of Lotus Notes. Organizations might take the decision of migration for making their work environment compatible with their client’s work culture. While individuals might need to migrate so that they can do their office related work from the comfort of their home.

What-so-ever may be the reason, the main question here arises is how can the migration be done without the expense of efforts, resources and funds? This process of migrating DBX files to NSF file can be performed manually with the help of the Numgrade.exe upgrade wizard which has been introduced by IBM. The entire process can be completed in a few simple steps which hardly consumes much time. Here goes the steps which needs to be followed for swiftly migrating the DBX files into NSF:

Step 1: Click on Start -> Run and then type cmd.exe and Click ‘OK’

Step 2: Now, enter the Notes Client program Directory and open upgrade wizard

Step 3: Click ‘Next’ and follow the consequent instructions until you reach ‘Finish’ button

Step 4: Now, in the Notes ID file provide the password

Step 5: Create Notes mail account in Outlook Express and provide the details such as the account name, user name and IMAP server

Step 6: Close the application

After the successful creation of Notes account in the Outlook express, select it and then click the ‘IMAP Folder’ button which appears in the right pane. Thereafter, a dialog box appears which displays the folders which already exist in the NSF database. In order to make the folders of your choice visible to everyone, you need to select them and then click ‘Show’ button.

Now, to perform migration from Outlook Express to Lotus Notes, simply drag the emails or data items from the Outlook Express folder to that folder which is recently added from NSF database. To quickly and easily carrying out the process, you can make selection of multiple data items in a single go. This process enables to perform precise conversion with ease and accuracy.

Although, this process of migration is efficient and effective but when the migration of multiple mailboxes needs to be performed, such as in the cases where the mailboxes of the systems of entire organization have to be converted, then this method might turn out to be tedious and time-consuming. In such a condition, that methodology should be adapted which requires minimal manual efforts and can provide quick results.

The use of third party software is the optimum choice in such a scenario where bulk migration of DBX mailboxes into NSF mailboxes is involved. You can perform an online market survey before purchasing one for yourself. Both Eseutil.exe and Isinteg.exe utilities are inbuilt with MS Exchange Server and facilitate soft and hard database recovery from the corrupt Exchange Server. By default, these tools are stored in the following drive location:

C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin

However, before, you make use of Eseutil and Isinteg tools, do the following actions:

Log in as Exchange administrator

Copy running or inaccessible EDB database in a backup folder

Dismount the EDB database from the Exchange server

Free the disk space by moving unnecessary files and folders into portable media

Check the hard disk for bad sectors using CHKDSK utility

Eseutil and Isinteg utilities can be applied on offline EDB files only and therefore database must be dismounted from the Exchange Server before you can use these tools. You can run Eseutil.exe from the DOS command prompt also.

Do the following steps to run Eseutil.exe from command prompt:

Click on Start>Run

In the run box, type “cmd” and press “ok”

Go to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin directory

Type Eseutil.exe in command line

Esutil.exe has two repair switches “/r” and “p”.

Eseutil /r command is soft database recovery mode of the Exchange Server.

If EDB files are severely damaged, then you should use Eseutil/p command. The command line to repair severely damaged private or public EDB file is:

Eseutil /p C:\Program files\Exchsvr\mdbdata\ primary name.EDB

After you have successfully repaired the EDB database with Eseutil /P command, run Eseutil /d command to defragment the repaired EDB file.

Run Isinteg.exe for integrity check of repaired EDB databases. The command line will appear like this:

Isinteg –s {Exchange Server name}-fix-test all tests

Select the repaired Exchange database file from the default Exchange server directory

Run the Isinteg command line till no errors are reported on the Server

Run the Eseutil \G command to check the integrity of the repaired EDB database

Remount the repaired EDB database using Administrative tools of the Exchange Server

If all users on the Exchange Server use MS Outlook or Outlook Express client, then there is little chance that the Exchange Information Store will contain Streaming media or STM file along with EDB and Transaction Log files. However, if POP3 client such as Windows Live email is configured on the Exchange Server, then Exchange Information Store will also consists of STM file and you need to repair both EDB and STM files in a pair.

Third party Software

Facing EDB corruption issues due to JET engine failure or software malfunctioning cannot be fixed with Eseutil and Isinteg command tools. Therefore, you must choose a third party Exchange Database repair utility. A proficient Exchange database repair utility can easily fix major corruption issues of the Exchange Server and repair EDB databases in a batch. The Exchange database repair tool usually convert EDB file into Outlook PST format. It recovers entire data of the Exchange mailbox from the inaccessible Exchange Information Store and saves in PST file format. Moreover, a professional Exchange database repair utility also allow network administrator to mount the recovered Exchange mailbox on the Server. EDB files are the database files of Exchange Server and they hold all the Exchange server data. Many times, MS Exchange server undergoes various unfavorable situations and you face issues with EDB files such as corruption cases, server downtime, import or export issues etc. There may be many causes that lead to corruption and damaged database files too. While working with damaged EBD files, you may come across various error messages like exchange Server error code 528. These situations are really very frustrating & you find yourself unable to resolve in absence of any proficient tool.

Microsoft has offered ExMerge utility in order to handle problems that occur in the database of Exchange server. ExMerge utility has been designed to extract emails from a corrupted Exchange server, save it in .PST file and place it at desired storage location. Outlook PST (Personal Storage Table) is a file format that contains copies of windows messaging, calendar entries, e-mails and other items supported by Microsoft Exchange. ExMerge is useful to avoid virus attacks as it has the capability to find and extract a specific e-mail message from infected EDB.

ExMerge utility can be applied for a single mailbox, chosen mailboxes or all mailboxes in an Exchange server store. Including this, it can also process a batch of .PST files, matching them up correctly with Exchange mailboxes while importing data from .PST files to an Exchange server. ExMerge is advanced about duplicating messages as it prevents you from exporting the same contents of a mailbox twice to the same .PST file. Another advantage of this outstanding duplicate detection is that you can use ExMerge as a “brick level backup” solution which is backup of a single mailbox instead of an entire database.

For installing ExMerge utility, you must have Exchange server 2003 (along with admin tools of Exchange 2003). The supported versions of Exchange server are 2003, 200 and 5.5 & supported operating systems include Windows 200 SP3, Windows server 2003 and Windows XP. However, MS Exchange server 2007 doesn’t permit ExMerge utility to be run directly on the Exchange server machine which is possible with the earlier Exchange versions. On the other hand, this utility takes many steps & more time to run. Usually, it consumes 45 minutes as the average time the initial step takes around 45 minutes for a single GB of EDB data.

Furthermore, ExMerge can take one to two hours for the execution of the second step of the process. So, you should plan carefully before you actually apply this utility on corrupt Exchange database. In case, you do not get satisfactory result from ExMerge utility, you are recommended to look for a third party tool like Kernel for Exchange server recovery. It is a trustworthy & proficient EDB recovery tool and it easily resolves all issues of Exchange server and finally converts inaccessible EDB files into Outlook PST format. The MS Exchange Information store also takes care of space management and buffer management.

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service uses a database engine called Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), which is a transaction-based database technologyservice to access all its data. In order to start this services, user types ‘services.msc’ in the Run command prompt and then select ‘Microsoft Exchange Information Store’ service. Following these steps, the service usually starts, but in some situations the service fails to start in case information store gets corrupted or damaged due to certain reasons such as unexpected system shutdown, damaged headers, antivirus scan, log file corruption, virus attacks, etc.

A user may encounter an error message in Microsoft Exchange Server while trying to start Microsoft Exchange Information Store service manually, which is as follows:

“Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service on local computer, Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.”

On occurrence of such an error message, data saved in information store becomes inaccessible. To resolve such an error message and to access the records saved in Information store, perform the following guidelines:

Repair the corrupted EDB file using Eseutil/p inbuilt repair command.

In case the Eseutil/p command fails to repair, then restore the EDB file using an updated backup.

In case backup file is unavailable or get corrupted, then use a third-party Exchange Server recovery software to repair the corrupt EDB file.

Kernel for Exchange Server is an apt solution to be opted to repair corrupt, damaged or inaccessible MS Exchange Server EDB files. The software supports MS Exchange Server 5.0, 5.5, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010 versions. The software offers advanced settings options in order to optimize repair and recovery process of EDB database files. The software all versions of MS Outlook and Windows operating systems and offers user-friendly interface such that no technical expertise is required for operating. For more information you can follow this web path http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/Exchange-Server-Data-Recovery.html

Resolving EventID 489 in Exchange Server

Microsoft Exchange Server database EDB files may generate numerous error messages due to corruption that leads to unable to open them. To overcome such a situation, an efficient Exchange Server recovery software may prove to be an apt solution to be opted in order to resolve the error messages and to restore the corrupt MS Exchange Server EDB database files.

The following event log appears on viewing application event log:

Product: Exchange Server

Event Type: Error Event

Source: ESE Event

Category: General

Event ID: 489

Computer: Computer Name

Message: <Process Name> (<Process ID>) <Storage Group Name> An attempt to open the file “<file name>” for read-only access failed with system error <error code>: “<error message>”. The open file operation will fail with error <error code>.

Explanation

An unexpected error was encountered while trying to open a file.

The following phrase appears in the event description:

An attempt to open the file [path/file name] for read-only access failed with [Error Code and Explanation]. The open file operation will fail with error [Error Code].

The actual cause of EventID 489 depends on the error listed at the end of the description section of the event. The most possible occurred error messages alongwith their reasons and solutions are discussed as follows:

Error – 1032 - JET_errFileAccessDenied - Cannot access file

Reasons:

The file is locked or is in use.

Another process has stolen the file.

A virus checker may erroneously quarantine a file.

A backup process may temporarily deny access.

A flat file backup system or antivirus software may be running against the database or check file directories.

Permissions on the folder constituting files for information stores are not sufficient for the stores to function properly.

Solution:

Grant default permissions to folder constituting Exchange database files and to the drive where this folder resides.

Configure flat file backup and antivirus software to not scan the Exchange database sub-directories.

Use an online backup or an antivirus software.

Error – 1022 – JET_errDiskIO – Disk IO Error

Reasons:

A disk input/output (I/O) problem prevents Exchange from gaining access to a requested page in the database or to a check file.

A disk or controller failure occurs, and access to entire drive lost (may be temporarily).

The path for the check file is not correct caused due to drive failure.

Solution:

Execute chkdsk/f/r command at the run command prompt.

Check valid permissions on Exchsrvr folder structure.

Confirm that system has full control over Exchsrvr and all sub-folders on each partition containing Exchange data.

Troubleshoot any Windows NT file-level antivirus software running on the Exchange Server.

Check the System Log for I/O or drive errors.

Check and correct the path for the check file.

Correct the root cause, then restore the database from online backup in case a recent backup exists.

Error – 1023 – JET_errInvalidPath – Invalid file path

Reasons:

Change in the path for log files or check files before system restoration.

A corrupt check file or temporary file created while defragmentation or repair.

A corrupt file may generate such an error even if file path is correct.

Solution:

Move Exchange database files back to their original locations and restore again.

In case .chk file is corrupt, remove it and read all transactions into the database.

In case database remains inconsistent, restore it from online backup if a recent backup exists.

Kernel for Exchange Server is an email recovery tool that assists in recovering corrupt or damaged MS Exchange Server database files. The software creates a new EDB database having all recovered files that can be easily mounted to the Exchange Server. The utility supports MS Exchange Server 5.0, 5.5, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010 versions. You should must visit this site for seeing detail http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/Exchange-Server-Data-Recovery.html

Solving Jet Error - "JET_errRecordNotFound, the key was not found", “Jet_errRecordDeleted”

Microsoft Exchange Server is the most commonly-used email server application in organizations nowadays as it offers better communication medium. MS Exchange Server stores all its email data such as emails, calendar entries, meeting request, contacts, attachments, tasks, drafts, notes, journals, etc. in EDB database files. These EDB files may get corrupt due to numerous unseen reasons such as abrupt Exchange Server exit, JET Engine errors, Server downtime, corrupt / damaged database header information, virus attacks, hardware malfunction, power failure, etc. The corrupt EDB files may lead to unable to mount the Exchange database. Also, emails and other email items in the Exchange Server become inaccessible.

Other reasons for corruption of MS Exchange Server EDB files or generation of error messages includes deleted mailboxes, unable to initialize the MS Exchange Information Store service, duplicate keys (Identifiers), etc.

The minorly corrupted Exchange Server EDB files can be resolved using Eseutil.exe utility. In case EDB files are severely corrupted, it may generate an error message:

“JET_errRecordNotFound, the key was not found”, “Jet_errRecordDeleted”

On generation of such an error message, the inbuilt utility Eseutil.exe fails to recover email data that further makes database inaccessible and data loss. The cause of generation of such an error message may be difference in structures of EDB and STM files or severely corrupted Exchange database file structure.

Some other JET Engine Exchange Dirty Shutdown errors are:

# JET_errBadDbSignature-531

# JET_errDatabaseStreamingFileMismatch-540

# JET_errDatabaseDirtyShudown-550

# JET_errConsistentTimeMismatch-551

# JET_errInvalidDatabaseId-1010

# JET_errInvalidDatabase-1028

# JET_errFileInvalidType-1812

# JET_errDatabaseCorruptedNoRepair-1224

A third-party tool Kernel for Exchange Server repairs and recovers corrupt, damaged, or inaccessible Exchange database EDB files by converting them to PST files that can be easily accessed using MS Outlook. It consists of 4 main database files namely Pub1.edb, Priv1.edb, Pub1.stm and Priv1.stm. These database files may get corrupt, damaged or inaccessible leading to inaccessibility to database information. Some of the reasons for corruption of EDB files include power failure, abnormal Server shutdown, virus attacks, database header corruption, hardware malfunctioning, deleted mailboxes, antivirus software scans Exchange database files, database reaches its maximum file size limit of 16 GB, corrupt Exchange transaction log files, Jet Engine errors, duplicate keys (identifiers) and so on.

Priv1.edb file that got corrupt or damaged due to exceed in size limit which is 16 GB does not allow mounting it on Exchange Server and becomes inaccessible. The corrupt Priv1.edb files may generate some error messages. Some of them are as follows:

“JET_errRecordNotFound, the key was not found”, “JET_errRecordDeleted”.

“The system cannot find the path specified”.

“Unable to initialize Microsoft Exchange Information Store service”.

“Database contains serious errors and cannot be automatically repaired”.

“Error opening Message Store”.

“The database engine found a bad page”.

“The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time”.

“The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file ‘(unknown)’. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data”.

“Unable to initialize DAO/JET DB Engine”.

Low organization cost as Exchange Server 2010 supports storage of some user mailboxes in cloud or third party websites

Easy sharing of calendars to other users on same or different exchange servers

Exchange 2007 to 2010 migration is a comprehensive process and may include several steps:

Migration of single mailbox from Exchange 2007 to 2010

Migration of several user mailboxes from Exchange 2007 to 2010 version

Export of Public and Private EDB folders from Exchange Server 2007 to 2010

Export of Log files mounted on Exchange Server 2007

Transfer of user mailbox folders from Exchange 20007 to 2010

You can import all Exchange 2007 mailboxes in the new Exchange 2010 database files using inbuilt Move Mailbox Wizard of Exchange Server 2010. Exchange Server 2010 uses online migration of Exchange mailboxes from old servers. User mailboxes are not locked for access during most time of online exchange migration.

However, Exchange 2007 mailbox migration is a time consuming process and not suitable for batch conversion of old Exchange mailboxes. You must use a smart Exchange 2007 to 2010 migration software to migrate user mailboxes from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 environment.

Exchange 2007 to 2010 migration utility successfully extracts Outlook user mailboxes from public and private Exchange 2007 database. Extracted user mailboxes are then exported by this tool to new Exchange 2010 database folder. Exchange 2007 to 2010 migration software is capable of batch migration of user mailboxes from old to new Exchange Server. It supports both offline and online migration of Exchange mailboxes. Exchange 2007 to 2010 migration program fully supports different versions of MS Exchange Server and MS Outlook. When the first Exchange Server in an administrative group is removed, certain issues with availability of free/busy folders and offline address books (OAB) can take place. The first server in an administrative group hosts the free/busy folders and OAB for that administrative group by default. Prior removing the first administrative group, those folders must be relocated to another server in the administrative group.

While moving or removing any Exchange Server, many other factors need to be considered. Take note of the server responsible for generating the OAB and Recipient Update Service. Care must be imparted while moving the routing group master role and while altering the bridgehead server for any connectors. However, many SMB’s do not follow the necessary processes and systems in place to monitor the Exchange Server and Active Directory. Investment in such process may look extravagant but the real need seems apparent once confronted with a real disaster situation.

Whatever is the organizational size or plausible investment budgets, a few things must always be considered for proper functioning of Exchange. These include information store status and their growth; disk utilization and performance; DNS availability, their health and performance; SMTP connectivity, their health and performance; physical and virtual memory utilization; and CPU utilization.

Those with a tight budget can take help of inexpensive monitoring tools that meet the basic requirements. Tools like Lepide Exchange Recovery Manager can significantly help which have flexi charges and provides an array of features. You should must visit and seeing detail solution for exchange server recovery

"Exchange Server information stores and mailbox sizes"

“Exchange Server information stores and mailbox sizes”

-
Exchange Server information store size counts to the sum of Exchange Server database (.EDB) and Exchange Server streaming (.STM) files.

Information stores sizes were limited to 16 GB in Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. From Exchange 2003 with Service Pack 2, size of stores was raised to 75 GB. However, the default size is only slightly higher at 18 GB without the creation of a specific registry value.

Enterprise Editions of Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 don’t pose any restriction on information store size. Moreover, up to 20 stores can be generated in four storage groups including any arrangement of public or private (mailbox) stores.

Mailbox quotas can be used to control growth of stores. Controlling store growth is necessary even with Enterprise Edition as the main concern is Exchange Server backup and disaster recovery time.

"Front-end/back-end Exchange Server topology issues"

“Front-end/back-end Exchange Server topology issues”

-
Starting from Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft came up with “front-end/back-end topology.” Earlier Exchange Servers were used for dedicated roles but since 2000, front-end servers were designated. They performed by checking the front-end option in Exchange server’s properties which helped to present a single name-space to HTTP/HTTPS (Outlook Web Access, Outlook Mobile Access, RPC over HTTP(S), Exchange ActiveSync), IMAP4 and POP3.

Servers not assigned as front-end servers are known as “back-end” servers. Back-end server and front-end server roles are different in Exchange 2000/Exchange 2003. However, in this topology, back-end servers are those which host mailboxes.

Even though front-end servers can be placed in perimeter networks, it is not suggested. Rather than placing front-end servers in perimeter networks or in internal networks, it is better to use secure appliances and SSL VPNs.

Another concern is the use of SMTP on front ends while deploying front-end Exchange servers. Since, SMTP is not “front-ended” like HTTP(S), IMAP4 and POP3. Therefore, SMTP running on a front-end server behaves exactly as SMTP running on a back-end server.
